Allergy-Safe Shopping Guide | Print |  E-mail

This shopping guide can be used to prepare the recipes in Allergy-Safe Family Food.

If you are adapting to an allergy-safe lifestyle, this Allergy-Safe Family Food shopping guide is for you. The aim is to save you time when shopping, as there are so many product choices available.

The products I have listed in the Allergy-Safe Family Food shopping guide are the ingredients I have used for the recipes, snack and lunchbox ideas in my book. All are available in mainstream supermarkets. These products are generally found in the health-food or organic sections, however some are also found in the general product aisles.

As you learn more about allergy-safe cooking, you will probably discover other products that suit your needs. And as supermarkets and manufacturers become increasingly aware of the need for allergy-safe foods and clearer labeling, new products are sure to come onto the market.

IMPORTANT NOTE

The products listed in this shopping guide have been coded according to their ingredients lists only. The codes make no allowance for ‘May contain ...’ statements. Ensure you look for the ‘May contain …’ or ‘Contains …’ warnings. The manufacturer may choose to provide a warning on the label if there is the slightest chance that a product may have come into contact with an allergen. However, they are under no legal obligation to do so.

Always follow the advice given to you by your medical practitioner/allergy specialist regarding your allergy risk for products that come with a warning that they may contain a particular food allergen.

While every care has been taken to ensure that this information is correct and up to date at the time of publication, food manufacturing processes and ingredients can change  and frequently do — without warning, and with no outward change to the appearance of the product. By law, food manufacturers must list on the label all of the nine major food allergens that food contains, however small the amount.

However:

ALWAYS READ THE LABEL ON ALL FOOD AND BEVERAGE PRODUCTS EVERY TIME YOU USE THEM.

Also, familiarize yourself with the alternative names that each particular food can be called. For example: Alternative names for egg:- albumin, apovitellin, avidin, binder, coagulant, dried eggs, egg solids, egg white, egg white solids, egg yolk or yellow emulsifier, glaze, globulin, lecithin, livertin, lycosyme, meringue mix, ovalbumin, ovglycoprotein, ovoglobulin, ovamucin, ovamucoid, ovotransferrrin, ovovitellin, powdered egg, silici albuminate, simplesse, vitellin, whole egg
