Managing Severe Allergies in Victorian Government Schools

Summary of important points

  • Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency that requires a rapid response.
  • Certain foods and insect stings are the most common causes of anaphylaxis.
  • The key to prevention of anaphylaxis is identification of triggers and prevention of exposure to these triggers.
  • Schools need to develop prevention strategies in consultation with the student and the student’s parents.
  • Adrenaline given through an EpiPen® auto-injector is the treatment of choice for anaphylaxis. The EpiPen® is designed so anyone can use it in an emergency.
  • School staff who are responsible for the care of students at risk of anaphylaxis should obtain training in how to recognise and respond to an anaphylactic reaction, including administering an EpiPen®.
